Fr Patrick Claffey is Chaplain to the Francophone Community in Dublin. He has worked in French West Africa and has published extensively on this area.
Fr Claffey has been a member of Divine Word Missionaries since 1969; he worked in Francophone West Africa (Togo & Republic of Bénin) (1977-2002). He was the Head of Mission Studies Department at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, National University of Ireland (2004-2011). He was Assistant Professor, Study of World Religions, Dept for the Study of Religion & Theology, Trinity College Dublin (2011-2022) specialist in African & Asian Christianity, Dharmic Religions (Hinduism and Buddhism), Christian & Islamic fundamentalisms. In later years, along with extensive travel and research in Asia, he still retained contacts and interest in Francophone West Africa.
He did his postgraduate Studies at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London (1999-2003) and his PhD was published by Brill (The Churches in Dahomey-Bénin: A Study of their Sociology-Political Role 2007).

Lowell Professor and former Chair of the Harvard Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, and Faculty Dean of Kirkland House at Harvard University, Tom is a graduate of Lawrence, Columbia, Wisconsin and the Sorbonne, visiting professor at Berkeley and, in Paris, at the Ecole des Chartes and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, specialist on Renaissance France, translator into English of Michel de Certeau (whom he knew), Gilles Deleuze, Marc Augé and Réda Bensmaïa, recipient of les Palmes Académiques and of numerous fellowships including a Fulbright and a Guggenheim, an honorary doctorate from l’Université Blaise-Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand) and la Médaille d’honneur de la Ville de Tours.

John McLaughlin

John McLaughlin is a practising architect and senior lecturer in architectural design in UCC. Following studies in Dublin he spent six years working in Paris on major civic and cultural projects. He was director of architecture with Dublin Docklands Development Authority from 2004 where he led the development of the Grand Canal Harbour district. In 2010 he set up his eponymous architecture practice and began teaching. His professional practice includes the design of public spaces, cultural buildings, private houses, and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. He is married to Anne Gélineau and they have two teenage children.

Mr Alan Dukes has occupied numerous senior roles over very many years in the Irish government (Minister for Justice, Finance, Transport, Agriculture, etc. ) as well as being Leader of the Opposition. He is a Francophone and a Francophile: he worked for several years in Brussels, was President of the Alliance Francaise de Dublin (2001-11) and Director General of the Institute of International and European Affairs, is an Officier de la Legion d’Honneur and President of the Irish Board of the Legion d’Honneur.

Originaire de Saint-Timothée au Québec, Suzanne Fortier a été la 17e principale et vice-chancelière de l’Université McGill de 2013 à 2022. Auparavant, elle a assuré la présidence du Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie (CRSNG) du Canada de 2006 à 2013. Elle a occupé le rôle de vice-principale aux études de 2000 à 2005 et de vice-principale à la recherche de 1995 à 2000 à l’Université Queen’s, située à Kingston en Ontario, où elle était également professeure au Département de chimie et à l’École des sciences informatiques (1982-2006).

Tomi Ungerer (Strasbourg 1931 – Cork 2019), universally acclaimed artist, writer, political satirist and author of over 140 books for adults and children (including the classic ‘Les Trois Brigands’), spent the last c. 40 years of his life, with his family, in a remote corner of West Cork. At Tomi’s funeral in Bantry in February 2019, the then French Ambassador, M. Stéphane Crouzat, read out an appreciation of him written by one of his fans, President Emmanuel Macron. The French President had bestowed the Grande Croix de la Légion d’honneur on Tomi at the Elysée just four months earlier in October 2018. In this Dialogue Amopa Irlande, Tomi’s son, Cork-based photographer, Pascal Ungerer, will present his father’s life and work.

Dr Marie-Luce Paris est professeure associée en droit à UCD Sutherland School of Law. Son enseignement et sa recherche portent principalement sur le droit européen des droits de l’homme, le droit public européen et le droit constitutionnel comparé.
Lors de sa présentation, Marie-Luce expliquera son parcours et notamment les raisons qui l’ont poussée à changer de carrière (élève avocat à universitaire) et de pays, et la transition entre la France et l’Irlande dans une discipline, le droit, qui présente de vraies différences entre les deux pays. Elle parlera aussi de ses dernières recherches notamment de son travail sur une possible assemblée citoyenne sur la neutralité en Irlande.

Professeur JEAN BRIHAULT est un grand ami de l’Irlande. Il est Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur et ancien Président de l’Université de Rennes 2 où il fut Professeur de littérature et de civilisation irlandaises. Au tout début de sa carrière d’enseignant, il enseigna à Foyle College, Derry (Irlande du Nord) et à Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe).
En parallèle de ses activités dans l’enseignement, il a toujours occupé des fonctions de dirigeant au sein du monde du handball, étant élu par exemple Président de la Fédération européenne de handball et Vice-Président de la fédération internationale de handball. Il travaille entre autres à mettre en place des initiatives pour accompagner les SHN (sportifs de haut niveau) et pour les aider à bien s’intégrer dans leur vie post-sportive.

« Histoire diplomatique à histoire du droit : l’histoire constitutionnelle comme constante »
Objet de l’intervention : Je souhaite présenter mes recherches et le projet qui me motive dans le cadre de ma thèse. Je souhaite aussi expliquer brièvement mon parcours d’étude et comment j’en suis arrivé à réaliser une thèse en histoire du droit alors que j’ai commencé à travailler en histoire diplomatique. Enfin, je souhaite présenter mes deux Unités de Recherche et le travail qui est réalisé au sein de celles-ci, en plus de présenter des perspectives scientifiques internationales qui pourraient grandement aider mon projet.

Sandrine Pac-Kenny est chargée d’éducation avec Post-Primary Languages Ireland depuis quatre ans. Avant cela, elle travaillait à Presentation Secondary School, Wexford en tant que professeur de français et d’espagnol. Elle s’occupait de l’échange scolaire. Un projet qui lui tient tout particulièrement à cœur car c’est là où tout à commencer quand elle a embarqué pour son aventure irlandaise en 1986 à l’âge de 11 ans. Sa ville natale de Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres, 79) est jumelée avec Tipperary Town. Sandrine fait aussi partie du groupe FLAM de Wexford : Les enfants francophones de Wexford, dont le but est d’entretenir la langue maternelle des enfants via des journées ludiques. Sandrine a reçu les Palmes académiques en 2019 et est actuellement la secrétaire de Amopa Irlande.
Sandrine viendra nous parler de son parcours et des langues étrangères en Irlande.

sur l’Irlande et l’Union européenne pour une citoyenneté européenne engagée’.
Emmanuelle Schön-Quinlivan est maître de conférences en sciences politiques européennes à l’université de Cork. Elle a obtenu la Chaire Jean Monnet en Citoyenneté Européenne Active en 2021 et coordonne l’Action Jean Monnet ‘Formations des enseignants’ 2022-2025. Elle est directrice du Hub in Active European Citizenship à UCC (https://www.ucc.ie/en/government-and-politics/hub-in-active-european-citizenship/ ).
Née en France, elle est diplômée en droit européen des universités de Paris XII, la Sorbonne Paris (BCL), et d’Edimbourg (LLM) et en sciences politiques de Sciences Po Paris (MA) et University College Dublin (PhD). Emmanuelle a co-fondé avec Trish Collier le programme d’enseignement au niveau primaire sur l’Irlande et l’Union européenne, My Big Friendly Guide to the European Union (www.bfgtoeu.com ). Son intérêt pour les pédagogies délibératives et la citoyenneté active en Europe est au cœur de ses recherches les plus récentes. Outre ses activités fréquentes de sensibilisation à ces sujets au sein de la société civile, Emmanuelle contribue de manière régulière dans les médias sur les sujets de politique française et européenne.

Paul nous parlera en anglais de la Legion Etrangere (histoire, traditions, valeurs, liens avec l’Irlande …) et de sa vie de Legionnaire. Paul est actuellement President de l’Amicale des Anciens de la Legion Etrangere en Irlande.

Sandy Sinnott, resident in Ireland since 2005 and originally from Haute Savoie in
France. Sandy is an accredited Tour Guide and qualified Interpreter in France and in
Ireland. During the health crisis, Sandy decided to create virtual guided tours by
introducing French-speaking people in Ireland to cities and regions of France by
working with the Alliances Françaises.
For this second discovery talk, come and discover (or rediscover) the beautiful
city of Lyon, its history and its culture….
Each participant will receive after the presentation an additional video with
traditional recipes from the city of Lyon that you can cook at home!

Dr. Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire is a lecturer in Culinary Arts in the Technological University, Dublin. Máirtín is well known as an award winning chef, culinary historian, food writer, broadcaster and ballad singer. In 2009 he became the first Irish chef to be awarded a Ph.D. for his thesis ‘The Emergence, Development and Influence of French Haute Cuisine on public dining in Dublin Restaurants 1900-2000: An Oral History.’

Clodagh, journalist for the Irish Examiner journalist, is responsible for making the public aware of the remarkable story of Cork-born TCD languages graduate, Mary Elmes (1908-2002) through her 2017 biography of Elmes, A Time to Risk All. Elmes is credited with saving the lives of at least 200 Jewish children in France during the Second World War. Some of them attended the inauguration of the Mary Elmes Bridge in Cork city in 2019. Elmes is the only Irish person to receive the ‘Righteous among the Nations’ award at Yad Vashem (Israel)

Dr. Sylvie Kleinman, Chercheuse Associée en Histoire (Trinity College) vous propose un dialogue balladant dans les rues de Dublin, pour y découvrir, ou redécouvrir, quelques liens historiques entre la France et l’Irlande à travers les siècles.
